d. Sylva, NC at home, 25 Dec. 1965, buried Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesville, NC. He had a large growth on his neck that was not a goiter and for which he visited Duke Medical School where the decision was not to excise it. After his death, Nannie had it examined and was told that excising it would have killed him. When he died, he had leukemia.
Obituary in Asheville Citizen Times 27 December 1965. “Charles Rector Moody 88, a retired farmer and dairyman of Sylva, died Saturday….He was a native of Haywood Country a son of the late James and Nancy Jaynes Moody, a prominent pioneer family of the country and had lived in Jackson County for 44 years”…

Nannie Moody told the story that Nancy loved her little vegetable garden. When she wanted work done, she would say “Jeems, I have some work to do in the house before I work in my garden, so don’t you dare go near my garden. If there is anything I can’t stand, it is a clumsy man trampling in my garden.” Then she would tie on her apron and seem to be real busy. Within 15 minutes, she could count on seeing James doing all of her work for her in the small garden.

“Funeral eulogy for Reuban Moody: “Angel of Death has beckoned from our earthly home our beloved and much honored brother Reuban Moody in the 90thyear of his age. He was born August 11, 1801 aboutsix miles from Greenville, S.C.
He moved to Haywood and married Miss Polly Leatherwood in the year of 1826 and had a family of ten children, sixty grandchildren and sixty seven great grand children. He was an unusually robust man often boating that he never took a dose of medicine in his life but:
‘Leaves have their time to fall and flowers to wither at the North winds Breath.
And we trust this he has listened to the soul cheering plaudit “well done thou good and faithful servant, enter thou into the joys of thy Lord.”
He was a zealous member of the Baptist Church. The years roll on remaining our brightest lights from the Church. We are impressed with the necessity for “Faithful Workers” to fill their places and should Christians adopt the watchword “Duty” they will find “there’s life alone in Duty done—rest alone in striving.” Com: William L. They were adopted by Congressman Felix Walker and took his last name. Felix Walker is the person who took Nancy Hanks to Kentucky for Abraham Enloe.

Life:
He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Waynesville, was well known in the community.
My grandmother, “Nannie” Elizabeth Angeline, told me many times that she had heard the story from him that he met Nancy Hanks when she lived near the family on Jonathan’s Creek and before she worked as a servant to Abraham Enloe at Swain County. He remembered seeing her when the Enloes sent her away to travel to
Kentucky with Congressman Felix Walker. F. Walker was the person who began the “bunkin” in congress because he was the congressman from Buncombe County and he began the non stop verbal behavior.. According to the story, Nancy H. had her baby in a log cabin and he showed that cabin to Lizzie “Nannie” and told her he did not vote for Lincoln because Lincoln was illegitimate. One of Nannie’s favorite play activities was to go to the cabin at Dellwood with her friend ? Boyd and wonder which corner was the corner where Lincoln was born. I researched this in high school and college and there are books and news articles about this. I have believed the story all of my life.

A newspaper article from 1910 states that all of their children and grandchildren were present for a family reunion except for Mark’s family. The article is interesting due to other family information: “ FAMILY REUNION at Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Liner’s Sunday, August 21, 1910. Last Sunday Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Liner entertained their children and grand-children at their home on Montgomery street near Depot street. The following were present: Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Henry, of Dellwood; Mr. and Mrs. C. R. Moody of Plott; Mr and Mrs. W. H. Liner of Atlanta; Mr. J. W. Liner of Waynesville; Mr and Mrs Joseph Justice of Waynesville. There were thirteen grand-children. All their children and children’s children were present and what is remarkable there has never been a death in the family—children and grand-children. Mrs.Liner prepared a big dinner, such as the older mothers of this country only can prepare and it was enjoyed to the full extent. This reunion must have made Mr. and Mrs. Liner’s hearts glad, as well as the hearts of their children. Bro. Liner said: “The Lord be praised for His tender mercies to us.” The ancestors of Mr. and Mrs. Liner were Scotch, Irish and German. Mr. Liner’s grand-father served seven years in the revolutionary war, until it closed. He belonged to a regiment of 900 men when they went in; when they came out at the end of the war only 9 were living.
Mr. Liner’s grand-parents looked upon four generations of their people before they died. They left 165 children and grand-children.”

**Notes about John Paul:
Johann Paul was born 1680 near Frankfurt, Ger. Some of the family came from Luckenberg near Trier on the Mosel River. It is said that he was a miller.
The family arrived Philadelphia Oct 1733 aboard the “Charming Betty” captained by John Ball that sailed from London. The families took the oath of loyalty to the crown on the 12th. Passenger lists gave names and ages: (Johan Paulus 53, Maria Catherina 46, Johan Andreas 12, Johan Gasper 8, Catherina Margaret 18, Maria Catherina 16)
He had his first land patent by Jan 1735 and lived in an area in the Northern Neck of Orange Co, VA (now Madison and Culpeper counties). His land adjoined the land of Christian Clements.
John Paul and his family arrived in Philadelphia in Oct., 1733 and by Jan., 1735 John Paul had his first land patent. From Oct, 1733 to Jan. 1735 he arrived at, settled on and probably built a house on his land in an area in the Northern Neck of Orange, Co. VA (what today is Madison and Culpeper Counties). John Paul's land adjoined the land of Christian Clements.
Johann died in 1761 at his home in the Shenandoah Valley. His will was dated 9 Oct 1759. His estate sale was dated 10 Sept 1761.

Life: He was a lawyer and Justice of the Peace, 1866 a State Legislator, strong union man and only man at Jonathan’s Creek to vote against secession, was a Republican, 1868 Constitution delegate at Raleigh to rewrite the N.C. constitution and at end of war still had 12 slaves who reportedly did not want to leave the family.
From Nannie Moody to Jane McHan: 1) “Greenberry Garrett was called Green Garrett. He married into the Rogers family from Tennessee. She brought 12 slaves with her and her Mammy ran the household. While in legislature, Green lived at Dellwood. Later he owned Black Camp Gap on the current Blue Ridge Parkway. the first person to map the Appalachian Trail (from Massachusetts) hiked to Black Camp Gap and was impressed by Garrett’s intelligence and asked why he preferred to live in an isolated spot instead of using his law knowledge and remaining a legislator or governor. Garrett said he had already been a legislator and asked to run for Senate or state offices. Garrett then said “most men end not being true to themselves and if they are caught, they go to jail. Nope, rather live where I am.”
2) during the War between the states, Garrett made salt peter for the Confederate Army. 3) During the war, Union General Kirk’s renegade band of men came to the area looting food and goods. A man came riding through the area, yelling “Kirk’s men are a’ comin’”.Confederate soldiers were asleep at Green Garretts. It was breakfast time and the women made them get up and they hid them n the woods. The slaves made up beds before the Yankees came. When the Yankees arrived, they asked for grain for their horses and Garrett agreed to give it to them. However when he saw that they were spilling it over the ground, he became angry and told his wife that they had enough trouble feeding all of the soldiers, children and wives of soldiers at war. He ran out and informed the enemy soldiers that they could have what they wanted, but not to spill one more piece of grain.”
Note: It is said that General Kirk is a direct ancestor of Rodney and Bill Kirk in the McHan line , but this information is not confirmed. Gen Kirk settled in Tennesee after the war and owned most of Gay Street in Knoxville. This line was also reputed to be part of Baltimore Kirk sterling family.
