I. John Vernon McHan Sr.
b. 22 Aug 1911 at Swain County, at mouth of Galbraith Creek (house was where railroad crosses the river)
d. 20 July 1997, age 85 at Swain County Hospital, Bryson City, NC. Buried at Swain County Cemetery Deep Creek, NC
Illnesses: Emphysema and bladder Ca directly linked to excessive smoking
m. Nancy Evelyn Moody 3 June 1939 at the Sylva “Moody Bottom” home of her parents
Children: Eva Jane McHan, b. 7 Feb 1941, Sylva, NC. John Vernon McHan Jr. b. 9 January 1945 Savannah, GA.

Homes: Lived at McHan Farm at Ela until 8 years old when they moved to Olivet for one year and back to the farm. Ages 10 and 11, he attended a boarding school, and then moved to Whittier until he went to college. After college, he lived at Sylva and Bryson City.
Education: Attended boarding school at Dorland Bell for 4thand 5thgrades. Graduated Swain County High school 1930. Attended Western Carolina Teacher’s College for 1933-1934 living at the home of the Founder and President whose wife was Vernon’s aunt. His dream of continuing in college ceased because of an illness of his Mother. He was awarded a full math scholarship to Auburn, but also could not take it because he had to take care of his Mother.
Jobs:
Taught school 1930-31 because his father was ill and he taught his classes for a year.
Road work-1932 Gateway to Cherokee and Newfound Gap to Clingmans Dome
Worked Hooper Drug Store, Sylva 1935-1938 doing pharmaceutical work (the druggist was an alcoholic and often could not work, so Dad filled prescriptions)
Worked Sylva Ford Company in parts dept 1939-41
Worked Savannah GA shipyards 1942-1946 (probably exposed to asbestos that later damaged his lungs along with excessive and longtime smoking of cigarettes)
Moved Bryson City 1950-1967 owner of McHan Motor Co. Sold Willys Jeeps and cars and had motor repair area.
Worked Job Corp at Smokemont 1967-1976.
Member: Charter member Presbyterian Church Sylva, Bryson City Presbyterian Church—Elder, treasurer choir member, Bryson City Lions Club (officer in many capacities) Volunteer fireman Bryson City. Member: Republican Party.
Hobbies/interests: Hunting, particularly with his son, fishing, singing and dancing
(folk, square and clog), liked the country music of his cousin
Janes comments: His nickname was Mack and also, John called him “Ty Cobb”. He thought a high light of his life was seeing Babe Ruth play a game at Washington, D.C.
He hated flying and often flew in small planes in bad weather to Detroit. He flew to Memphis for my college graduation, but refused to fly to Europe.
II. Nancy Evelyn Moody McHan
b. Plott/Dellwood, NC 19 July 1910; baptized in a creek at Maggie Baptist. I asked if she was scared and she said “no, hold you good, dip you, and pick you up.”

Homes: Lived at Plott until she was 8 and then moved to Moody Farm at Dellwood, and at age 10 moved to Sylva. Mid 1950 moved to Bryson City, NC Moved to assisted living south of Charlotte age 93.
Education: a. graduated Sylva High School, played basketball for 4 years, Latin and Spanish scholar, b. Attended University of Tennessee at Knoxville for one year and pledged Alpha Theta sorority.
Jobs: Worked as telephone operator at Sylva for 7 years. 6 of those years she was the chief operator with a console where one spoke to each caller and plugged in the connections on a board. She took an accounting course and kept the books for Vernon’s dealership/garage. She worked 13 summers at the Historical Association at the Smokemont Ranger Station.
Member: Sylva Presbyterian Church (charter member), Bryson City Presbyterian Church, The Eastern Star, The Womans Club, the Business and Professional Women’s Club. Member: Democrat Party.
Hobbies/interests: Horseback riding, reading, knitting, crochet, crosswords
